After witnessing so many truly amazing stories while in Israel, it has been a lingering goal on my heart to capture the faces of amazing and inspiring stories/people here in my life in California. Maria Parker was brought to my attention by a new friend Theresa that I was encouraged to meet back in January. Theresa told me while holding up a picture of her son’s wife and family from North Carolina, “I bring this picture along with me to remind myself to keep praying for my daughter in-law Jenny, she was diagnosed with brain cancer late last year. She has four kids” Later through an email she told me about Jenny’s sister, Maria Parker, also from North Carolina and her goal to raise $1 million for brain cancer research by competing in a cycling competition called Race Across America to spread awareness and ultimately found the needs to cure brain cancer, the very disease her sister is currently suffering under. Her organization is called 3000 Miles to a Cure.

The annual adornment of masks that are inherently frightening and grotesque stems from the aim of chasing away ‘the spirits of winter away in preparation for the coming spring and new harvest’. The carnival-like festivities stem from both Christian and Pagan traditions.”
